May vs might


1. may / might + hele werkwoord om toestemming te vragen of zeggen dat iets niet is toegestaan. 'may' is mogen en 'might' is zou mogen.

2. May / Might + Hele werkwoord kunnen ook gebruikt worden om te zeggen dat iets mogelijk gaat gebeuren. Hierbij is might minder waarschijnlijk of hypotetisch.

Must, have to, don't/doesn't have to
1. must (not) + hele werkwoord als jij vindt dat iets (niet) moet

2. has to / have to + hele werkwoord om zekerheid, noodzaak of verplichting uit te drukken. Iets moet van iemand anders.

3. don't have to / doesn't have to + hele werkwoord iets hoeft niet, het is geen verplichting.

Must, have to, should, ought to
4. should (not) + hele werkwoord als jij vindt dat iets (niet) zou moeten. Je geeft advies of raadt iets af. Minder krachtig dan must.
5. ought to + hele werkwoord om advies te geven; om te vragen naar eigen verplichtingen. Vragende zinnen met ought to zijn erg formeel. Ought to drukt ook een morele verplichting uit: 
'We ought to help those in need.'
