What is a Compass?

Parts of a Compass

A compass has a needle, a dial with cardinal points, and a base plate. The needle always points north.

Cardinal Points

The four main directions are North, East, South, and West. These are called the cardinal points.

Using a Compass

Hold the compass flat in your hand. Rotate yourself until the needle aligns with the north on the dial.

Finding Directions

Once aligned, use the dial to find other directions. The compass helps you navigate by showing you your heading.

Practical Activity

Go outside and use the compass to find north. Identify objects in each cardinal direction.
