Which one is direct speech?

1. She said, "What time will you be home?"
2. She asked what time I would be home.

Which one is direct speech?

1. He said, "What are you doing now?"
2. He asked what I was doing then.

Which one is indirect speech?

1. John said, "I can't finish this on my own."
2. John said that he couldn't finish it on his own.

Which one is indirect speech?

1. She asked if I could help her with that task.
2. She said, "Can you help me with this task?"

Which one is direct speech?

1. They said, "Why did you leave early?"
2. They asked why I had left early.

Reported speech

Reported speech is when we tell someone what another person said/told/asked/explained by taking it out of quotations.

"You are wrong" she said. --> She said I was wrong

"Give me your charger" he asked. --> He asked me to give me my charger

2 important parts 

Pronouns: make sure to change the pronouns so the meaning doesn't change

- Ann: "I paint pictures" -> Ann said she painted pictures 

"What is your favourite music" my dad asked--> My dad asked me what my favourite music was.

Time: indirect speech is always one step in the past because when you say what someone else said that had already happened.

"You'll never get a job if you don't have your hair cut."
They said...

"You forgot to clean your shoes last time and they always look at shoes."

'You should buy a new suit.'
They said...

'You mustn't drink too much coffee beforehand because you'll be nervous.'
They said...

Don't worry if you don't get it. Something better might come up.'
