When do you use the present perfect and when do you use the past simple?

Finish this sentence, use the present perfect or simple past: I ... (to work) 14 days during this summer.

Finish this sentence, use the present perfect or simple past: They ....(to wash) the car.

The rules! 

• If there is no clear indication of time, use the present perfect. (exception is AmE)

Indicate the difference:
- I lived in Barcelona for 5 years.
- I have lived in Barcelona for 5 years.

Irregular verbs 

• Make sure to learn the irregular verbs. I will give these as homework together with the vocab words in smaller chunks. 
• The reference book (p.88-91) provides them in alphabetical order. Would you like me to arrange them in a different order (per type)? Please, raise your hand! 

Indicate the adjunct of time: I have been busy with homework from 5 until now.

Adjectives & adverbs 

bijvoegelijke naamwoorden  (wat voor..?): 

- zelfstandig naamwoorden

• She is a crazy sister. 

bijwoorden (hoe?): 

-  werkwoord : We were dancing badly all night long.  

-  bijvoegelijk naamwoord: She is an extremely crazy sister. 

-  ander bijwoord: He eats really slowly. 

-  de gehele zin : Luckily, we escaped the thunderstorm. 

spelling & difficult ones 

-  bijvoegelijke naamwoorden: cijfers schrijf je met een streepje

• a six-year-old child; a 30-minute swim

- bijwoorden: meestal -ly achter bijvoegelijk naamwoord

• Sure - surely; perfect - perfectly 

- bijwoorden: soms net even anders of échte uitzondering 

• easy - easily; happy; happily
• well - good
