Adverbs vs. Adjectives

Learning Objective:

At the end of this lesson you will know what an adverb and an adjective is. You will know the difference between the two and know how to form them.

What do you know about adjectives?
(what is it, examples etc.)

Adjective

= bijvoegelijk naamwoord

- Says something about a noun (zelfstandig naamwoord)

example: the red car, a big house, a fast runner

What do you know about adverbs?
(what is it, examples etc.)

Adverb

= bijwoord

- Says something about a verb (werkwoord) or an adjective (bijvoegelijk naamwoord)

- example: the really red  car, the extremely sour lemon

How do you make an adverb?

You add -ly to the end of a word:
- extreme > extremely

exceptions:

- words ending with -le get -ly instead  adorable > adorably

- consonants  (medeklinkers) + y get -ily  heavy > heavily

- words ending with -ic get - ally  automatic > automatically

Adjective

- says something about a noun (zelfstandig naamwoord)

the BIG house, the RED car

Adverb

- says something about a verb, adjective or another adverb

to speak QUIETLY, 

EXTREMELY loud
