Let us look at the inside and its components.

A coil is basicly a wire wounded around a iron core.

When electricity flows through the coil the coil becomes a magnet.

Closed circuit

The electricity starts to flow.

The coil becomes a magnet. The clapper will go up.

open circuit

When the clapper is up the circuit is not closed anymore. The electricity will stop flowing.
