Relative clauses 

Als je extra informatie over iets/iemand wilt geven, gebruik je een relative clause. In het Nederlands noemen we dit een betrekkelijke bijzin.

Zo'n bijzin begint meestal met: who, which of that. 

In het Nederlands begint de zin vaak met die/dat.

Who - personen 

Which - dieren of dingen 

That - personen, dieren of dingen.

Soms is de bijzin noodzakelijk om te begrijpen over wie of wat de zin gaat.

I like the woman who lives next door.

This is the book that (x) I was talking about.

In zo'n bijzin kun je who, which of that vaak weglaten

Relative clauses

Soms geeft de bijzin alleen extra informatie. Je gebruikt dan nooit that, maar altijd who of which. 

Deze bijzin staat vaak tussen komma's en kan weggelaten worden zonder dat de zin onduidelijk wordt. 

Carla, who is my best friend, loves to paint. 

Relative clauses

Je kunt who en which samen met voorzetsels gebruiken. 

Meestal staat het voorzetsel dan achteraan in de bijzin. 

The jungle that (x) Tarzan lived in, was full of strange animals. 

Het voorzetsel kan ook vooraan in de bijzin staan, dit is formeler. LET OP: who verandert dan soms in whom. 

Mr Frank, to whom I talked just now, sends you his regards.

Whose geeft bezit aan. 

Je vertaalt het met: waarvan, van wie, wiens of wier. 

That is the girl whose dog was stolen. 

The woman …… helped us at the tourist office was really nice.
