  • Something happened in the past and time is important;
  • Recognized by words like "last week", "last year", "in 2013"
  • Regular verbs: infinitive + -ed (played, moved, passed)
  • Irregular verbs: different forms (ran, swam, flew)

  • Negative sentence:

Present perfect
When you want to say:
  • Something happened in the past and time isn't important;
  • Something started in the past and is still going on. (since, for, in)

  • He plays. -> He has played.

When do you use some? When any?
Affirmative (bevestigende) sentence: some
Example: I would like some sweets.
Negative (ontkennende) sentence: any
Example: There isn't any milk left.
Question sentence: any (or some when the answer is probably  "yes")
Example: Can I have some water?
Example 2: Do you have any money?

Quantifiers: little/few
When do you use little and when few?
Little (weinig): non-countable nouns -> little money (You cannot say two moneys)
Few (weinig): countable nouns -> few people (you can say one person, two people)
A little (een beetje): A little tomato sauce.
A few (een paar): A few cloves of garlic.

Quantifiers: much/many
When do you use much and when many?
Much: non-countable nouns -> There isn't much water left. (can't say: I have two waters.)
Many: countable nouns -> There are many people coming.

  • When talking about something that always happened in the past.
  • I used to go to grandma every Thursday.
  • We used to study together.
  • My mom used to bring me to school, but I have my own car now.

Tag questions
  • When do you use positive tag questions? 
  • When do you use negative tag questions?
  • Negative sentence means positive tag questions:
  • There aren't any spiders in my room, are there?
  • Positive sentence means negative tag questions:
  • Your name is John, isn't it?

  • Repeat form of "to be" or any hulpwerkwoorden (have, can, will, etc.)
  • Repeat personal pronoun or there.
  • No hulpwerkwoorden? Form of "to do"
