"Help, I Have a Problem!"

You will be assigned a profession and a problem to solve as if you are really working in that job. You have to improvise and respond appropriately to the situation.

Instructions
1. You work in pairs
2. Each pair draws a card with a profession and a card with a problem.
3. The person with the profession must solve the other student’s problem by asking questions and giving advice.
4. The other person plays the role of the customer/patient and must explain the problem as realistically as possible.

A mechanic gets the problem: "My car is making a strange noise." He must ask questions and give advice, such as:

"Can you imitate the sound?"
"When did the problem start?"
"Maybe the battery is dead, let me check it."

A hairdresser gets the problem: "My hair is way too short!" He must respond, for example:

"Oh, that’s unfortunate! But maybe we can style it in a way that looks better?"

Conditionals
Conditionals describe the result of a certain condition. The if clause tells you the condition (If you study hard) and the main clause tells you the result (you will pass your exams). The order of the clauses does not change the meaning.

If you heat ice, it melts!
If babies are hungry, they cry.

The ZERO conditional
  • We use the ZERO conditional  to talk about facts
  • It's is always true

Structure of the zero conditional

             > If this happens,       then that happens. 
               If clause          +         main clause
if + present simple           +         present simple
Always a COMMA when the if part is in the beginning of the sentence.
