What are phrasal verbs?

A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and a preposition or adverb. 

This changes the meaning of the verb. Important: these two always belong together in the sentence. You don't "pull them apart".

For example:

I am looking at my book. (My eyes are looking at the book.)

I am looking up information on the internet. (I need to find information and I am on the internet to find it.)

I look out for cars when I cross the street. ( I make sure there's no cars when I cross the street).

What are the meanings?

The teacher handed out the test. 

That watch was handed down from my grandfather to my father. 

The thief had to hand over the stolen goods.

I sent off the order last week but the goods haven't turned up yet.

I came across an interesting book in the library. I took down the title. Here it is.

We asked some friends around to watch a film, but the video was playing up and it eventually broke down.

Rewrite the incorrect sentence:

She looked the children after when their mother was in hospital.

It was a beautiful summer evening so I asked the cat out for a drink.

Sometimes phrasal verbs are followed by a particular preposition to make three-part verbs. 

 Look at these examples of three part verbs, then try and complete the sentences on the next slides with a preposition from the box. 

Examples: 

I'm looking forward to the weekend.

She's been going out with him for six months now.
