1. Stretch your vowels

Some vowel sounds are longer in English.

For example, compare the Dutch ‘park’ to the

English ‘park’ (/paahk/).

2. Don’t pronounce the final -r

When words end in -er, you don’t hear the final

-r. Actually, it sounds somewhere between ‘eh’

or ‘ah’: winner.

Dutch has no -th sounds like English, so you

might need some practice to get the hang of it.

b ) PAIR WORK Read tip #4. The following words are difficult to pronounce, because

the pronunciation is very different from the spelling. Look up how these words are

pronounced. You can use a(n online) dictionary or YouTube. Take turns pronouncing the

words.
