Countries outside Western world > less developed.

Europeans were saving, educating and civilizing their colonies. They saw themselves as the saviour. 

However: this is a form of racism!

Economic reasons
EU countries wanted more profit from industry. 
They needed fossil fuels and raw materials. 


These materials were turned into goods in factories in EU and then sold back to the colonies.

EU countries want to show how powerful they are.
A big empire means a lot of status. 

Britain was very proud of their colonial empire, it is the largest empire ever!!
