What is heat?
  • Heat is a form of energy that can raise the temperature of an object.

  • Heat can be transferred from one place to another.

  • Heat always moves from warm places to cold places.

Thermal energy
All bodies have kinetic energy and therefore, so do the molecules or atoms that form them.

Thermal energy is the average kinetic energy of the atoms or molecules in a substance.

Slide 4 - Slide

We can see that the molecules in a solid substance are bonded, joined together. So, besides the kinetic energy which makes them vibrate, there is also energy stored in these bonds.

When we heat up a substance, we are tranferring energy and, therefore, increasing the thermal energy of its molecules. The molecules vibrate faster.
Solid
- Fixed shape (crystal)

- Molecules are vibrating

- Not a lot of kinetic energy
         (low temperature)

Slide 5 - Slide

Liquid
- No fixed shape, Volume fixed

- More space between molecules and they shake a lot more (more kinetic energy)

- Medium kinetic energy
           (medium temperature)

Slide 6 - Slide

Gas
- No fixed shape, no fixed volume

- Distance between molecules is big

- Velocity of molecules is high
(Kinetic energy is high)
