Past Simple
In the video you saw how to use the Past simple.  We will shortly show it again in these slides. Past simple(verleden tijd) must be used when we describe something that took place in the past at a specified time. 

- The past tense of regular verbs is formed by adding -ed to the verb.
- If the verb ends in -e, only -d is added: notice - noticed.
- In questions and negative sentences  did is used.
- Irregular verbs do not form their past tense by adding -ed: buy - bought

Past continuous
The Past continuous (verleden tijd duurvorm) is used to describe that something was going on in the past
Somebody was in the middle of doing something in the past. 

The Past continuous consists of the past tense of be + the -ing form of a verb.

Often the Past simple and the Past continuous are used in one sentence. To describe that something happened (past simple) while something else was going on (past continuous).

1. When he phoned, I was watching tv.
2. He spotted a mistake while he was checking the accounts.
3. As she was having lunch, the phone rang.
