How does it work?
  • Each province: Regional council
  •  All provinces together: States general
  • Stadtholder: The commander of the Republic’s army and the navy, employed by the Regional Councils.
  • No Compulsory religion!

Prince Maurice (Maurits)
  • William of Orange is succeeded by his son Maurice: he becomes stadtholder.
  • He is a great military leader and becomes the leader of the Dutch State army to fight against the Spanish.
  • Johan van Oldenbarnevelt leads the States General as the state attorney.

  • Maurice and van Oldenbarnevelt are very different. 
  • Oldenbarnevelt wants peace with Spain. This is better for trading.
  • Maurice is a military leader....he doesn't want peace.
  • 1609-1621: Twelve Year's Truce  
  • Maurice tries to find a way to get rid of van Oldenbarnevelt.
  • 1618: Maurice starts a coup and beheads van Oldenbarnevelt

  • Trade and industry were going better in Holland and Zeeland
  • Spain was fighting a lot of wars at the same time.
  • the Dutch Republic got some strong allies. England and France also felt threatened by the power of Spain
  •  Maurits was a good military commander. He made the army more disciplined and professional.
