Slide 4 - Slide

  • The herring gull is a true coastal dweller. During storms the herring gull is in its element. Then he hangs above waves in the surf looking for something edible. Shellfish and fish are favorites.

  • Herring gulls are colony breeders and breed together in the dunes in their hundreds. A partner for life is not what herring gulls do. A failed brood in particular can be a reason for separation.

  • The number of herring gulls is declining in the Wadden area. This probably has to do with the disappearance of intensive fishing by people in the Wadden area. Ironically, this actually makes it more difficult for the herring gulls to get their food.
