Colonies outside of Greece

• A colony is territory of ​​a country outside of that country

• Greece is very infertile due to the dry climate and rocky soil (only 20% is suitable for agriculture)

• A failed harvest quickly meant famine

• Some Greeks left in search of a better life

• They sailed on ships across the Mediterranean to other areas to live there

• Around 750 BC. the Greeks had colonies in Spain, Italy and Turkey

• So much trade developed between the colonies and the 'mother country' that the Greeks stopped creating new colonies around 550 bc.

• Through the Greek colonies, people in the Mediterranean became familiar with Greek culture (such as: mythology, sculpture, etc.)

The Greek spread their culture. Alexander the Great was one of the most famous leaders who did so!

Barbarians!

 Other languages sounded like “barbarbarbar…” to them. So the Greeks started calling foreigners barbarians – people whose culture they thought was not as good as theirs.

Why do we find Greek culture so important compared to other cultures from the antiquity?

1. The Greeks thought up some exceptional things that you hardly see at all among other peoples in Antiquity

lifelike sculptures, democracy, philosophical ideas 

2.  A lot of what was known about the Egyptian, Persian and other cultures has been lost

That is because of the conquests by Alexander the Great. The Greek culture took over from the other cultures

3. There was a lot of interest in Europe in the Greek culture. That was mainly because of the Romans.

 We even often see the culture of the Greeks and Romans as one culture — classical culture

Why do people in the west find Greek culture more important than other cultures from that time?
