What can you do if you don't know the meaning of a specific word?

Reading strategy: words (1)
  1. Scan the letter on the hand-out and the question.
  2. Mark (underline, highlight, circle) words that you don't know (exactly).
  3. Write down what you could do to find the meaning of those words. (which strategy?)
  4. Write down the words and what you think they mean.

first your strategy, then the translation/meaning of the words.

Adjective (bijvoeglijk naamwoord)
The tall building.  
Tells us something about a person or thing (noun/zelfstandig naamw). 

Position in sentence:​ Before a noun  > tall building

big car, blue car, fast car, modern car, dangerous car, etc.

Adverbs (bijwoorden)
I rarely eat breakfast. He walked carefully.
 
Use: 
Tells us something about a verb or an adjective. 

Position in sentence:​ 
Either before the verb or at the end of the clause.

Irregular issues 
  • good vs well: He is a good teacher and she teaches well.
  • daily, early and more don't change
  • hard vs hardly --> different meanings
  • sensory perception: taste, look, feel, smell, sound --> adjective in stead of adverb. (so not nicely, greatly, well etc.)
