V4- test reading & creative writing
Week 42 = Unit 1 test (35 min.)
  • vocabulary Unit 1 (E-N and N-E)
  • irregular verbs, 
  • past simple (2nd form/went), 
  • present perfect (has/have +3rd form - has gone), 
  • asking questions (on the test the answer is given -> you write the question, e.g. They did the dishes last night. Did they do the dishes last night? 
  • making negative sentences with do/does/did (+ infinitive/1st form) 

Test week = reading/writing test (50 min.)
  • Reading test = similar to reading text in Of Course (true/false, skimming, scanning for specific information, fill in the gap (linking word), close reading)
  • Creative writing (240-280 words) using the past simple, present perfect and irregular verbs
E.g. Write about last week/yesterday; the house you grew up in; a famous person from the past, a grandparent when he/she was young/alive

Creative writing - 20 min.
Use 240-280 words -  using the past simple, present perfect and irregular verbs - to write a composition about ONE of the following topics:

  • What you did  last week/weekend/yesterday; 
  • Your primary school; 
  • A grandparent when he/she was young or still alive

Reading strategies
Skim the text first (skimming = quick reading to understand the general idea of the text by quickly reading the text: title, subtitles, look at the pictures, read the first and last sentence(s) of every paragraph; read the introduction and the summary if present)

Read the questions

Scan the text = quickly read the entire text for specific information (nouns, names, numbers, etc.)

Close reading = read the text thoroughly to get very detail in the text. Read every word and pay attention to the grammar, punctuation, linking words and phrases.

Making questions/negative sentences
Auxiliaries (2 verbs or more) in the sentence:
Use the auxiliary 
(can/could/will/would/shall/should/must/may/might/has/have + present perfect/past perfect/is/am/are/was/were)
-> I can dance till the cows come home! Can you dance until the cows come home? You can't dance etc.
-> We have always loved cream teas! Have you always loved cream teas? No, we haven't ...


Lexical verb (1 verb, not being an auxiliary) in the sentence:
  • Do + infinitive -  present simple I/you/we/they
  • Does + infinitive - present simple he/she/it
  • Did + infinitive - past simple - all pronouns
-> She cooks really well. Does she cook really well? She doesn't cook really well.
-> They went to school yesterday. Did they go to school yesterday? They didn't go to school yesterday.
