Lesson phases model
Phase
Explanation
Start
Welcoming, lesson aims, activating prior knowledge (subject and language).
Middle
Activation: variety in instruction and practise moments. Informal checks and feedback.
End
Checking for understanding and reflecting upon lesson aims

Slide 5 - Slide

Begin phase
Time: 3-5 minutes

  • Create your word cloud in advance with words related to the theme of the lesson and project it on the board.
  • As a class: ask the students what the lesson will be about today and what will be explained.
  • Individually or in pairs: students create a sentence using as many words from the word cloud as possible.

Middle phase (5-10 minutes)
Think: Student receives a question/problem or concept to discuss. The students are given some time to think about it.

Pair: Students tell each other their answer or solution. They can compare and possibly adjust their solution or answer.

Share: The teacher selects students to share their answers or put their solutions on the board. Other students are regularly asked for comments.

End phase

Create an exit ticket in advance - asking about .

Goal: at a glance, you can see who does or does not understand the material and know where to start your next lesson.

Explain this task to the students.

Personal development aims
Aim: Students can reflect on how their learning approach effected their final assignment

Language: Students use vocabulary mats with signposting, process, effort words as well as success criteria to answer questions set by the teacher to guide them.

Interactivity: Students can identify what part of their approch was successful and how they would improve next time (FT).

Design a phased lesson - 45 minutes
Use the lesson phase model (also available on teams)
Decide on a lesson you could adapt/create
Create your subject and language aims
Which activities can you use in the 3 phases
The handout provides a variety of activities you can use

Feel free to create your own!

Slide 12 - Slide

Share and compare
Find a colleague from another subject
e.g language with language, subject with subject
Share your lessons and compare your activities
What can you 'borrow' from your colleague?
