How/Form
Had + past participle (voltooid deelwoord).
Uitzonderingen
Het voltooid deelwoord van onregelmatige werkwoorden heeft zijn eigen vorm. Zie blz 283 voor deze lijst.

Past simple vs past perfect
When
Voor datgene in de zin dat het eerst gebeurde -> past perfect.
Voor datgene in de zin dat daarna gebeurde -> past simple.
How/Form
Past simple: werkwoord + ed
Past perfect: Had + past participle (voltooid deelwoord).
Examples
The train had just left when you arrived.
She hadn't eaten anything before she went to bed.
