Review Gerunds vs Infinitives

Slide 16 - Slide

Gerunds vs Infinitives
An infinitive is the base form of a verb, often preceded by "to" (e.g., to run, to eat, to study). It can function as a noun, adjective, or adverb in a sentence.

A gerund is a verb ending in -ing that functions as a noun (e.g., Running is fun, I enjoy reading).

Both infinitives and gerunds can act as subjects, objects, or complements, but their usage depends on the verb or context.

Slide 17 - Slide

Gerunds vs Infinitives
1. Gerunds (Verb + -ing)
Gerunds function as nouns in sentences.
Examples:
Subject: Swimming is good exercise.
Object of a verb: I enjoy reading.
After prepositions: She’s interested in learning Dutch.
After certain verbs: He avoided talking about it.
🚨 Exceptions & Special Cases:
Some verbs must be followed by a gerund, not an infinitive (e.g., enjoy, avoid, admit, consider, suggest).
❌ I enjoy to swim. ✅ I enjoy swimming
