- Many people fled to the Republic from:

France: King Louis XIV prosecuted protestants (withdrew Edict of Nantes).

Spain and Portugal: no freedom of religion or freedom of speechs

The end of the Golden Age

Why did the Dutch Golden Age end? (4 steps:)

1. Act of Navigation (England) and high taxes (France)

2. The Dutch Republic started wars against England and France

3. The disastrous year (1672) = Republic was attacked bij EN, FR.

4. The Republic won, but the economy didn't recover  = end     Golden Age.
