Gene expression
Gene expression - activating a gene
A gene is turned off or on under certain conditions.
Ex. Genes for making hair is turned off in the liver.
If a gene is turned on it can be read and processed - make a protein.
Proteins control the colour, shape and function of your body.

Spontaneous mutation
  • Organism created by fertilized ovum
  • Cell division occurs by mitosis.
  • DNA is copied every time a cell occurs. This can cause                        mutations in the base pair sequence (ATCG).
  • Mutation in sex cells can be passed on to offspring at fertilization.
  • Mutation in body cells (two copies of each chromosome) only cause a "problem" if the mutation affects both alleles (version of the same gene).
  • Spontaneous mutations lead to genetic variation. May be beneficial or harmful.
