Line and shape are two of the seven basic elements of art along with, Form, Texture, Value, Space and Color. These are the building blocks of all art and are a good place to start when making, looking at or analyzing works of art.

Line 
a point moving in space. Line may be two-or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract.

Shape
An element of art that is two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width
