can - vragen of iets mag
could/may - vragen of iets mag, maar beleefder
be allowed to - vragen of zeggen dat iets (niet) mag volgens de regels.

Je kan om toestemming vragen maar je kan ook toestemming geven.

Dit is een belangrijk verschil. Nier ieder woord kan je voor beide gebruiken.

TOESTEMMING GEVEN: May, can, can't, may not, must not, be allowed to

TOESTEMMING VRAGEN: may, can, could, be allowed to

May I ask you a question? - mag ik je iets vragen?
