Reading strategies- Scanning
When you’re scanning, it helps to think in terms of targets. Here are some other tips:
  Read your questions first and then start scanning!
1. Look at the title and the pictures. This will give you a clue about the most important information, the subject of the text and the structure.
2. Scan for the two or three search terms/ keywords that describe the information you want. You can recognize terms more readily on the page if you have them in mind while you scan. 
3. Read the context. When you found a word that you were looking for, read the sentence before and after that word to know more about the subject.
4. Look at all italicized or bold words. According to popular publishing convention, authors often italicize and explain terms the first time they use them.

Time expressions
We use time expression to let people know when something happened (past tense), is currently happening or temporary (present continuous), permanent (present simple) or in the future.
There are many words and expressions to refer to time. You can use these to put events into a particular order and to make stories and narrative more interesting.

Time expressions usually go at the end or at the beginning of a sentence:
Yesterday I went to school.  or  I went to school yesterday. 

However, you also have some that go in the middle of the sentence such as: Before, After, While, When, etc.

Past continuous
- In progress over a period of past time
(in the middle of the action)


- Often used when things happen simultaneously:
Shorter action: past simple
Longer action: past continuous.


The past of ‘to be’ + verb -ing

e.g.: I was cooking when you called.
It was getting dark when I walked home.

You are a passenger on a plane, and suddenly the pilot became unwell and you had to fly the plane. Of course, you landed the plane safely. Now, all the newspapers want to hear your story. Write a news article about what happened. Include:
  • - What kind of plane you were flying in
  • - Why or how the pilot became unwell
  • - What your first reaction was
  • - Which steps you took to land the plane
  • - Whether the pilot was okay in the end
  • - How you feel about flying now
