Indefinite

Indefinite article: a / an.

Je gebruikt a of an als je het over iets of iemand in het algemeen hebt. Net zoals bij het Nederlandse 'een'.

Als je in het algemeen iets in het meervoud wilt zeggen, laat je het lidwoord weg.

A gebruik je als de eerste letter van het woord dat volgt als een medeklinker wordt uitgesproken, ook al schrijf je een klinker!

a European country [jeurop]

a useless thing [joesles]

Definite article

Het lidwoord the maakt van een zelfstandig naamwoord een specifiek exemplaar. Net zoals het Nederlandse 'de' of 'het'.

The wordt ook gebruikt als het zelfstandig naamwoord naar iets unieks verwijst. (The White House, the Queen, the sun)

Bij geografische namen gebruik je the:

 wel bij: rivieren, golven, zeeën en oceanen, gebieden, punten op de aardbol, woestijnen, bossen en regenwouden: the Nile, the Persian Gulf, the North Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the North Pole, the Tropic of Capricorn, the Equator, the West, the Middle East, the Sahara, the Black Forest, the Amazone rain forest.

Als je hebt over dingen in het algemeen: 

I like potatoes. Mike is good for you. 

Geen the of an / a bij: namen van continenten, landen, staten, straatnamen, steden : Europe, North America, Asia, Italy, Mexico, Indonesia, California, Venice, Los Angeles, Hollywood Blvd, Oxford Street.

No article

Bij sommige plaatsen en transport:

I am at home. 

We are at school. 

They are going to Disney by bus. 

They flew to Japan by plane. 

We are going on foot.
