Activity: Role-Plays to Practice Professional Conversations

Objective: The goal of this activity is to help you practice speaking English in professional scenarios, similar to those you might encounter during your internship or in your future careers. 

This will also prepare you for your speaking exams.

How it Works

Pair Up: You will work in pairs. 

Role-Play slides on the board: Each pair will see a slide with a specific professional conversation scenario. The slide will describe the roles you and your partner will play and the context of the conversation.

Time: You will have 5 minutes to perform each role-play. After finishing, we will switch slides and partners.

Scenario 1

Introducing a new colleague to the team:

Student A: You are the manager. Introduce a new colleague to the team, including their background, skills, and why they were hired.

Student B: You are the new colleague.  Talk about yourself, your previous work experience, and your expectations.

Explaining how a product or service works to a customer:

Student A: You work in customer service. Explain to a customer how your newest product works and answer their questions.

Student B: You are a customer with questions about a new product you purchased.

Leading a meeting about a project you are working on:

Student A: You are the project leader. Start the meeting by explaining the project's goal and discussing the progress.

Student B: You are a team member. Ask questions about the project's progress and provide feedback.

Giving feedback to a colleague about their work performance:

Student A: You are the supervisor. Give constructive feedback to your colleague about their recent work performance.

Student B: You are the colleague receiving feedback. Respond to the feedback and ask questions.

Discussing a problem with your supervisor and proposing a solution:

Student A: You are an employee who has discovered a problem. Discuss it with your supervisor and propose a possible solution.

Student B: You are the supervisor. Listen to the problem and discuss the proposed solution.
