Maintaining order is one of the requirements for a successful lesson. You are in control, but LessonUp does offer several tools to assist you. Read here the practical tips for maintaining order with the help of LessonUp.

Engaging students during the lesson

Stating learning objectives and revisiting them.

Important in classroom management is taking into account the group dynamics and the educational needs of the students. Clearly stating the expectations, in the form of learning objectives, to the students is crucial for a good lesson. This way, the students know what they will be working on, and at the end, you can reflect on whether the goals have been achieved. This approach also makes the students more responsible for their own learning process.

Tip 💡: Formulate the learning objectives from the student's perspective: "You can...", or: "I can...".

Engaging students in the lesson

Participation with interactive questions.

Classroom management focuses on both responding to the students' needs and creating a positive learning environment. Interaction is a crucial part of it.

A recent study (2013) by James Pennebaker shows that using interaction (in the study: quizzes) not only keeps students engaged in a classroom (frontal) lesson but also has a positive impact on their performance in assessments.

Tip 💡: The interactive components in LessonUp offer extensive opportunities to process the learning material.

Show for student

By using the "Show for student" feature, students see the full layout of slides, quizzes, open questions, and the word web, just as it appears on the central screen.

During the lesson, you can utilize this functionality to direct the students' attention to you and/or the central screen rather than their own devices. When you uncheck "Show for student," the student has no reason to look at their device at that moment.

Use of components

Spinner

The perfect interactive feature to get your students involved is and remains the spinner. It randomly selects whose turn it is to ask a question or respond. Below are some ideas on how you can further engage your students with the spinner!

• Create two spinners on one slide: one with the names of the students and the other with concepts.
  
• Pose formative questions in the spinner.
  
• Link a question to this answer... Put the answer in the spinner and have students come up with a question for it.

Use of components

Traffic Light

With the Traffic Light component, you can indicate to the students that they should:

• Red: Work silently, independently
  
• Orange: Ask questions for help to their group
  
• Green: Discussion is allowed

1. Open a lesson.
   
2. Click on + Component.
   
3. Choose Traffic Light.

Use of components

Timer

Use the timer to indicate how long students can work on a particular task. For example, solving a mathematical equation, a comprehension exercise, or during a word web about a historical concept.

How do I add this to my lesson?

1. Open a lesson.
   
2. Click on + Component.
   
3. Choose Timer.
   
4. Set your time and/or check the settings under the gear icon.

Asking questions during

a LessonUp lesson

With the Ask Questions feature, students can ask questions via their devices during a classroom LessonUp session, and these questions will appear on the central screen. This feature also works well for hybrid teaching.

How does it work?

1. Start the lesson via "Start Lesson."
   
2. Click on the hand icon at the bottom right.

By clicking on the hand icon, you activate the asking questions feature. The first three questions asked will appear on this screen. Any other questions that have been asked will only appear after the current questions are answered.

Positive feedback

Providing positive feedback promotes students' motivation and creates a pleasant atmosphere in the classroom. The best way to do this is, of course, in person during the class.

Through the reporting of your lesson, you can ensure that the student can also view your (positive) feedback during the homework assignment.

How does this work?

1. Click on "Latest reports" at the bottom left of My LessonUp.
   
2. Click on the lesson you want to view.
   
3. Click on "Student" and select a student.
   
4. Leave a comment under "Write a response."

LessonUp remains a tool that can help you create the best lessons. Ultimately, you are the one who has control over your class and the lesson. Of course, these functionalities cannot do it all for you; as a teacher, you play the most crucial role in the process.
