Meeste schimmels zijn meercellig, behalve gisten (eencellig).

Meercellige schimmels bestaan uit schimmeldraden (lange dunne draden).

Samenvattend deze les...

Schimmels kunnen eencellig zijn, zoals gist, of meercellig, zoals paddenstoelen. 

Ze zijn nuttig omdat ze materiaal in de natuur afbreken en gebruikt worden in brood, kaas en antibiotica. Maar schimmels kunnen ook schadelijk zijn, bijvoorbeeld door infecties te veroorzaken of voedsel te bederven. 

Op cellulair niveau lijken ze op planten en dieren: ze hebben een celkern, een stevige celwand zoals planten, maar hebben geen bladgroenkorrels en halen hun voedsel uit andere organismen, net als dieren.
