The Netherlands

One main culture

Cultural minorities = A population group that is distinct from the dominant culture due to a different origin, language, religion or history

Examples of cultural minorities
in the Netherlands

Note: Segregation

Segregration: Being separated from others 

Social Segregation:

A group within the population who is not integrated into the society

In the Netherlands > most of the times voluntarily based

Other countries > forced > discrimination

Spatial Segregation: Separated in

physical space (location)

Integration and assimilation 

Intergration: The cultural minority adapts to the dominant culture but keeps parts of its own culture

Example: religion Dutch-Muslim

Assimilation: when the people have adapted completely to the dominant culture

Example: Dutch Immigrants to America 

Why doesn’t the Dutch government want new immigrants to live in the same neighbourhood?

Find a example of social and spatial segregation

Write down the following information

Who where segregated?

Who was/is the minority and what was the dominant culture?

What could be done to integrate or even assimilate them

Write it down in word and have it with you next lesson
