Musical.ly is an app, its users (known as ‘musers’) come from all over the world. They use the app to make videos, from 15-seconds to a minute-long. Then they alter the videos with filters, soundtracks and speed manipulation. Thousands of teens film and edit themselves singing along to their favourite Top 40 hits. No one knows the app better than Baby Ariel, offline known as Ariel Martin. She is the most popular muser with more than 20 million followers. Adweek talks to the celebrity and asks her about her success story.

Hi, Ariel. Thank you for giving this interview. Could you first introduce yourself to our readers?
Sure! My name is Ariel Martin. I’m 17 years old and I live in Florida.

Two years ago, you joined Musical.ly, and now you’re a social media celebrity. How did that happen?
In May 2015, I published my first Musical.ly. I fell in love with the app right away and started posting every day. One of my first Musical.lys got on the app’s home page, which means that everybody sees it. A lot of people liked it and they started to follow my account and watch all my videos. And then they followed me on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Snapchat too.

Your first Musical.ly looked very professional. Did you have any experience making videos before?
I only had an Instagram account. I was posting things for fun and following my friends to see what they were doing. But I loved to sing and to act.

What did your friends think about your success?
My friends supported me all the way. There were a few that were confused – just like, ‘What is happening?’ But my real, real friends stuck with me. And also through social media, I’ve met some of my best friends, which is really amazing. We all make videos together.

Your fans can follow what you’re doing pretty much 24/7. Does that put a lot of pressure on you?
Yeah. It does get hard sometimes just because I have to look pretty all the time. There are days when I don’t want to get out of bed and Snapchat something interesting. But honestly, it’s what I love to do, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Do you have a favorite video that you’ve made? If so, what is it?
I definitely have the most fun making Nicki Minaj musical.lys. I love all of her songs!

Who are some of your favourite musers?
I love watching Lauren Godwin on Musical.ly. She is one of my good friends. She has a great sense of humour and is super creative with each Musical.ly. Lauren makes comedy videos where she dresses up like different characters in crazy wigs and costumes. You have to check it out!

Are there any other new platforms that you’re interested in using?
Nope, nope – I’m good! Right now, my main goal is to just continue working on the social media platforms I’m already on.
