- Indicate something was happening in the past.
e.g. I was teaching a lesson when the bell rang.
You were listening to the teacher while they were talking.
In Dutch you would say... Ik was aan het... or ik zat te ...

Past -> Past perfect (voltooid verleden tijd)

I saw him leave. -> He said (that) he had seen him leave.

If you don' t know if the speaker is a he or a she, you can use 'they' in English, even if it refers to one person.
