Past continuous

An action was happening at a particular moment in the past.

Example: "I was reading a book at 8 PM last night."

Two or more actions were happening at the same time in the past.

Example: "She was cooking while I was studying."

Example: "She was cooking while I was studying."

To show that an action was interrupted.

Example: "I was walking to the store when it started raining."

You use the past continuous only if you can say we were doing something. 

The math teacher was giving a test

The principal was sitting in his office

the coach was playing basketball

The gardener was cutting bushes

Form of to be + verb + ing 

I was sleeping

You were living

He/she/it was swimming

We were going

You were doing

They were having

Peter .........(to learn) French when the geography teacher was killed

If a verb ends with an 'e', the 'e' dissapears

If a verb consists of 1 syllable with 1 vowel in the middle the letter doubles.  

To swim – he was swimming

To hit – we were hitting

to get - he was getting hit by the door
