> dystopia is a speculated community or society that is undesirable or frightening. It is often treated as an antonym of utopia. 
Planning:
  • What do we remember from Animal farm? 5 min
  • During reading: students answer handout 1 indvidually 30 min
  • 5 min Break with snacks
  • After reading activity 1:  Group discussion 15 min
  •  After reading activity 2: Think of a different ending! finish the cartoon. 10 min
  • Closing: Evaluation, scan the exit ticket with your mobile phone.5 min

  • You are going to listen to parts from ‘Animal Farm’. While listening, answer the questions on the handout. There are no right or wrong answers. 
  • DONT react verbally. You can add 'oh' and 'ah' and make additional notes at the end of the handout.

After reading 1: group discussion
Groups of three:
In English and on a reasonable sound level;
Discuss the questions on handout 2 amongst yourselves. Everyone participates. There are different roles:


- 1 note taker; writes down findings
- 1 speaker; briefly shares conclusion
- 1 conversation leader; asks questions, keep conversation going.

Conversation guidelines:
  • ask each other questions; what do they think/ feel? What is different from your experience? Why is that?
  • Really listen to each other; what is the other person saying.
  • Difficult one: postpone your first response; let the other person finish speaking. Can you rephrase your thoughts?
  • Everyone takes equal part in convo.
  • Be elaborate! Don't just use one word to describe what you feel.
After reading 2: complete the comic
Although people in The Netherlands and all over the world have the right to live in a democratic society, not all countries able to obtain this right.
The story of today is a bitter example, but you can be the author, you can change the end by writing your own ending to this story!

-Imagine you are talking to a classmate, like we have in the previous assignment.
-Start up with p.95 where Boxer and his friends are working hard and  are not equal to the pigs.
- Write the dialogue about discussing a new ending of Animal Farm in which you come up with  a situation you would be happy with if you would live on Animal Farm.

1. Write out the dialogue on your hand out
2. Start with answering what stood out for you. What made you think ‘WHAT?!’, for example, the theme, the characters, things that are unclear…
3. Come up with your own questions and be creative!
4. The conversation must fill at least ONE handout.
