1919

1919 The first flight from England to Australia started at Hounslow, London, with Ross and Keith Smith in a Vickers Vimy and ended in the Darwin area. They  safely on 13th December 1919.

1954

The immigration reception centre at Ellis Island, New York, which processed more than 12  million immigrants from 1892 to 1954, was closed.

Reading techniques

1. Predicting: what do you think is the text about?
2. Skimming: understanding the main idea and concept. 
3. Scanning: look for key information (for example: names, dates, numbers)
4. Intensive reading: read and understand the complete text.

Predicting

1. What do you think the text is about?

2. Look at the title and headings

3. Look at pictures.

4. What kind of text is it?

Skimming

1. To get the big picture, the global idea
2. Focus on what the text is about in general
3. Search for the source (=bron) of your text
4. Read the first and last paragraph 
5. Read the first and last line of the other paragraphs 
6. Skip words you don't know
7. What are the main items?

When I skim I do this:

Scanning 

1. Read the title and subheadings (=tussenkopjes)
2. When you are looking for specific information
3. Look for keywords that tell you more about what you are looking for in a text
4. When you find the information you are looking for, read that part more intensely
5. Look at bold or underlined words or words in italics. 

When do you use the reading technique scanning?

1. Deciding if you want to read a news article or not.
2. Reading and understanding a complete text.
3. When you look for a date of birth.
4. While reading a recipe.

Intensive reading 

1. Read the complete text, the goal is to understand the text completely
2. Pay attention to the introduction and subheadings (=tussenkopjes)
3. Look for the most important sentences and words 
4. Look up the meaning of difficult words 
5. Reread challenging paragraphs and read actively

2. You don't need to know all the words in order to understand a text.

Linking words

Example

1960

Ruby Bridges (6) passed all the tests and began attending Elementary School in New Orleans, becoming the youngest of a group of African American students to integrate schools in the American South. She was escorted by Federal Marshalls.
