Past Continuous

past continuous = longer moment in past

We gebruiken de past continuous dus om te praten 

over iets wat in het verleden (past) een tijd bezig (continuous) was 

Net zoals alle continuous vormen bestaat deze tijd uit 

een vorm van het werkwoord "to be" en de ing-vorm van het hele werkwoord. 

Op de volgende slide staat een overzicht. 

I was dancing	I wasn't dancing	Was I dancing?
You were laughing	You weren't lauging	Were you laughing?
He / she / is was travelling	He / she / it wasn't travelling	Was he / she / it travelling?

Past simple samen met past continuous: long action versus short action.

Dus: iets wat op een bepaald moment in het verleden bezig was, in de past continuous, wordt onderbroken door iets anders, in de past simple.  De past continuous duurt langer, de past simple is een korte gebeurtenis. 

I was cycling to school when the aliens landed.

When I came home my dad was cooking dinner.

I was doing my homework when my friend called.

We were playing a football match when it started to snow.

They weren't listening so the teacher yelled at them.
