colonisation
After the conquests, the colonization of America began.

America was known as a gold country.
Motives (reasons to do something) for the colonization:
1. Economic: Colonialism (domination of a colony by a mother country to earn money from it).
2. Religious: Conversion, converting Native Americans to the Catholic faith.

colonisation
Large parts of Central and South America were colonized by the Spaniards.

Settlers often entered into relationships with Native American women and had children: the emergence of a mixed society. (Mestizo)

Plantations

The settlers established plantations.
They had Native Americans work for them as slaves: very hard work.
16th century: mainly sugar
17th century: tobacco, cocoa, coffee

silver mine indians/slaven
Discovery of huge reserves of silver in Mexico and in the Andes.
Spain paid for its many wars with it: every year a large silver fleet sailed to Spain.
The conditions were horrific:
- along dangling rope ladders into the deep darkness
- climb up again with 40 kg bags

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Slave-made native Americans
The Spaniards forced Indians to work.
The work on plantations / mines is extremely hard.
Many Indians died because of:
- Exploitation and abuse
- European diseases

De Las Casas
Bartolomé de Las Casas (1484-1566)
priest

He was very critical of the treatment of the Native Americans
- 'Indians are worth as much as Europeans'
- 'exploitation / abuse is bad'
'Blacks' are not seen as people so they become the new                slaves...

Indians and black slaves
In 1543, the Spanish king banned Indian slavery.

The Spanish settlers took black slaves from Africa.

Turned out to be much stronger: rarely sick.
More demand for plantation products in the 17th century:
The Dutch, French and English established plantations in the Western Caribbean.
