What is a colony?

Colonization of America

After the conquests, the colonization of America began.
America was known as a gold country.

Motives (reasons to do something) for the colonization and migration:

Economic: To make money (silver and gold mines, plantations)

Religious: Conversion, converting Indians to the Catholic faith.

Colonization of America

Large parts of Central and South America were colonized by the Spaniards.

Colonists often entered into relationships with Indian women and had children: the emergence of a mixed society.

Through colonization, the Europeans spread their culture outside Europe (Europeanisation)

What is an example of Europeanisation?

3. the spread of Christianity
4. using potatoes as food

Colonial government

A European administration was established in the colonies.

  

Officials at a special ministry in the mother country supervised the overseas colonies.

Plantations

The settlers established plantations.

These large scale agriculture companies made a lot of capital. 

They let natives work for them as slaves:  this was heavy work.

16th century: mainly sugar

17th century: tobacco, cocoa, coffee
