Bij ontkenningen (zinnen met ‘niet’) in de past simple gebruik je didn’t + het hele werkwoord.

Als je duidelijk wilt maken dat iets bezig was in het verleden, dan gebruik je de past continuous.

Maken =  was / were + werkwoord + -ing.

The policemen were looking for the missing girl.
I was working at the restaurant when the news came in

Vragen maken: Was / Were + werkwoord + -ing.

Was Gwen waiting for you in front of the school?
Were Goblin and Peter fighting when Gwen arrived?

Bij ontkenningen (zinnen met ‘niet’) gebruik je in de past continuous:
wasn’t / weren’t + werkwoord + -ing.

I wasn’t feeling well yesterday.
They weren’t watching TV when I called

Simple vs. continuous
Je gebruikt de past continuous als je duidelijk wilt maken dat iets een tijdje bezig was in het verleden. Je gebruikt de past simple als je over één moment in het verleden praat.

Vaak gebruik je de past simple en past continuous samen in één zin.


Mary-Jean was walking in the park when it started to rain.
