De past continuous gebruiken we om aan te geven dat iets in het verleden een tijdje duurde of aan de gang was.

De formule van de past continuous is:

Onderwerp (ow) + was / were + werkwoord (ww) + ing

  • He was watching a movie yesterday.
  • Most of the guests at the wedding were dancing.
  • Dad was sleeping during the ceremony.

Let op deze spellingsveranderingen bij het maken van de -ing-vorm:

Als een werkwoord eindigt op een -e, valt deze weg.

  • Our team was clearly losing (lose).
  • We were just leaving (leave).

Bij werkwoorden die eindigen op één klinker (a, e, i, o, u) en medeklinker, voeg je een medeklinker toe.


  • I was swimming (swim).
  • Lydia was chatting with Mike (chat).
  • I was running as quickly as I could (run).
  • We were all sitting in the living room (sit).

LET OP: Dit geldt niet als het werkwoord eindigt in -w of -x.
  • It was snowing all day (snow).
  • Dad was fixing my bike (fix).
