  • British colony of Virginia
  • Settled in 1607 by 100 settlers.
  • They almost all perished before new supplies arrived in 1610.

  • 13 colonies were established by Britain in North America.
  • The Dutch, French and Spanish had NA colonies too.
  • Most settlers were farmers.
  • The colonies were very diverse (Mostly British, German & Dutch)

Self-rule?
  • The colonies had a high degree of self-government and independence.
  • It simply took too long to send messages back and forth.
  • The colonies were protected by militias.
  • Militias consisted of so called minute men.

Taxation
  •  After war with France ended (1763) with a British victory at a high price.
  • Because the war took place in the Americas, Britain imposed a series of new taxes.
  • Result: Protests and a growing resistance.

Boston Tea Party (1773)
  • Protest against taxation on Tea.
  • A group called the patriots dumped 342 crates of tea in the harbour. 
  • This led to harsh measures from the British government.
  • The patriots established their own government: the Continental Congress.
