Past Simple

What	Past simple
Gebruik:	Dat iets in het verleden is gebeurd en is afgelopen . Het gaat dan om dingen die kort duurden.
Vorm?	Werkwoord + ED of tweede rijtje (onregelmatige ww)
Signaal woorden	Yesterday, last week, last month, two days ago, four days ago, months ago, a second ago, etc.
voorbeelden:	He walked her home last night. I talked to him on the phone yesterday. We had our first practice yesterday.

Past continuous

What	Past continuous
Gebruik:	Dat iets in het verleden een tijd duurde / aan de gang was .
Vorm?	1. Kies uit was of were 2. zet + ing achter het werkwoord
Signaal woorden	when of while
voorbeelden:	I was listening to music. We were looking for our dog. He wasn’t paying attention.

It was raining for a while.

We were singing for a while

(past continuous)

Past Simple VS Past Continuous 

• Vaak gebruik je de past continuous en de past simple samen in één zin. 
• De past simple geeft dan aan wat er gebeurde terwijl er iets anders gaande was past continuous.

Voorbeeld zin:

I was reading a book when you phoned me.

Past Simple = ww + ed

- verleden tijd

- plaatsgevonden en afgelopen

- Signaalwoorden: last week, in 2012

Voorbeelden:

+ They cleaned the house last week

- They didn't clean the house last week

? Did they clean the house last week?

Let op! Onr. ww = 2e rijtje

+ He wrote a letter to her yesterday

- He didn't write a letter to her yesterday

? Did he write a letter to her yesterday?

Past Continuous = was/were + ww + ing

- verleden tijd

- was in het verleden een tijdje aan de gang

- Signaalwoorden: When, while

Voorbeelden:

+ They were cleaning the house when I came home

- They weren't cleaning the house right now

? Were they cleaning the house right now?

Past continuous vs. past simple

Je gebruikt de past continuous & de past simple om aan te geven dat er iets gebeurde (korte actie = past simple) terwijl er al iets aan de gang was (lange actie = past continuous).

 I was reading (lang) a book when the phone rang. (kort)

I was washing (lang) my car when the accident happened. (kort)
