AN- We use An/an when we hear a vowel (klinker). 

Vowels/klinkers - a, e , u, i, o.

A - We use A/a when we hear a consonant (medeklinkers)

Consonants/medeklinkers - b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y and z.

Sad Sally

Sally was sleeping when she was awoken by Jack. She walked to the door and found a letter. She read it and began to cry. She now knew that her boyfriend would never see her again. Why?

Solution:

Sally's boyfriend had recently undgone eye surgery. Jack, her boyfriend's guide-dog, awoke her after the postman had delivered a letter. The letter was from the doctor's. The letter was in response to her boyfriends medical tests that confirmed the surgery was unsuccesful and he would now be fully blind.
