Plural = meervoud
Which words do you put in plural form?

Without looking this up: how many different forms of the plural rules can you think of?

Plural rules
  1. -s at the end (cat -> cats)
  2. -es at the end if it ends in –s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x or -z (bus -> buses) (tax -> taxes)
  3. Double the –s (gas – gasses)
  4. -ve + s if it ends on –f or –fe (wive -> wives) (wolf -> wolves)
  5. If Y than –ies (city -> cities)
  6. If the letter before the –y is a vowel add an –s (boy -> boys)
  7. If the singular noun ends in –o add –ess (potato – potatoes) Exceptions: (photo -> photos)
  8. If it ends in –us plural is –i (cactus -> cacti) (octopus -> octopi)
  9. If it ends in –is, the plural is –es (analysis – analyses)
  10. If it ends in –on plural is in –a (criterion – criteria)
  11. Some nouns do not change (sheep – sheep) (species – species)
