Past Continuous

De Past Continuous ('ing- vorm') gebruik je:

als de handeling in de verleden tijd aan de gang was en op een bepaald moment door een andere handeling werd onderbroken;

Voorbeeld: I was screaming while we hit a roadsign

How?

Je maakt deze door was/were + ww+ ing

Voorbeeld: While I was watching TV, I was also preparing my lunch. 

Vorm van ''to be'' in verleden tijd

He was cleaning the house.

Bij welke personen gebruik je 'was' en bij welke personen gebruik je 'were'?

Wanneer gebruik je de past simple (verleden tijd)?

Past Simple

You use the past simple when something happened in the past and is finished.

The past simple is what we call in Dutch: de verleden tijd

When do you use the past simple?

Als het in het verleden is begonnen en het is afgelopen.

Er staan (vaak) signaalwoorden in de zin, zoals 'yesterday', 'last week', 'this morning', 'last year', 'when I was little', 'in 2001', 'ago' etc.

Donald Trump talked about himself on the telly yesterday.
Barack Obama left the White House in January 2017.

Past Continous en Past Simple

Past Continuous = al aan de gang ( lang)

Past Simple = iets gebeurde (kort)

    We were baking pie, while Jim arrived.  
     She was panicking, when she heard the bad news.
I was travelling to Africa, when Julie tried to call me.
