In a cleft sentences a
single
message is divided (cleft) into two clauses.
Cleft sentences are used to focus on a particular part of the sentence and to emphasize a message.
Use of ‘an extra’ relative clause (a clause that says something about a noun), while a simple sentence is possible as well.
- I sent
a letter
which arrived three weeks later.
- We went to dinner
at this restaurant
that I really like.

a wh- (what, when, where, why) sentence

Can be used to emphasise the subject or the object (lijdend vw or meew. vw) of the sentence:
My brother cut down the apple tree
It was my brother, who cut down the apple tree (emphasis on the brother)
It was the apple tree that my brother cut down (emphasis on the apple tree)
