3.1 - Crossing Borders
Australia - Built by 'criminals'
At the end of the 18th century, Britain wasn't doing well. Often people couldn't find work. So they were poor and hungry. Many people had to steal to survive, and got arrested. There wasn't enough space and money to send all these ‘criminals’ to prison, so they were put on prison transport ships to Australia. The first settlers in Australia were 736 prisoners and about 500 marines and officers.
