Assignment in pairs
Now think about all types of discriminations you see around you and/or have experienced yourself in school. Make a school plan to battle discrimination and racism in our school. 

NB: you need to address all types of discrimination and ensure all marginalized and discriminated groups in our school benefit from this plan.

Make a specific school plan:
  1. Education: Teach students about diversity, equality, and the effects of discrimination through lessons and workshops.
  2. Raise Awareness: Ensure that both teachers and students understand biases and stereotypes.
  3. Clear Anti-Discrimination Policies: Develop and enforce strict rules against discriminatory behavior.
  4. Create a Safe Environment: Encourage an atmosphere of respect, inclusion, and open communication.
  5. Reporting and Support Systems: Provide confidential ways for students to report discriminatory incidents and access guidance.

Group Assignment: Heroes
For this assignment you will research a ‘’hero’’. You can research one of the people who were mentioned in the text, but you could also choose for someone else who did something important against prejudice, discrimination or human rights. (Ask for approval from your teacher). 

Examples: Aletta Jacobs, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Tula, Harriet Tubman, Malala, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Desmond Tutu, James Baldwin, Wilhelmina Drucker

Your assignment must contain the following components:

  • The social problems of the time in which the hero was living 
  • The hero’s life story. Also give a few important (life) events which explain why this person has gotten a hero status. 
  • Method of resistance. In what way did the hero try to make a difference? What was his/her method?  
  • Did this person achieve his/her goals? Why or why not?
  • Description of two events/moments in which the hero impressed you.
  • In what way does the problem that your hero was battling still exist today? How do we solve this? Make an explicit plan to solve this problem.

  • Groups: 2 persons 
  • Source use: Find sources online and in books. You could also watch a movie as a source of information. (Gandhi, 1982/’’Selma’’, about Martin Luther King, 2014, or ‘’Invictus’’ or ‘’Mandela: long walk to freedom’’ about Nelson Mandela)
